‘Hero’ MTA worker spots man on subway platform with gun in his waistband

A veteran MTA cleaner was hailed as a “hero” after alerting cops to an out-of-state straphanger with a gun while she cleaned a Lower Manhattan train platform.

Ivette Leonetti, 54, of Brooklyn, was mopping the platform at World Trade Center/Cortlandt Street station on Monday when she noticed the man sitting on the platform bench had a gun in his waistband.

Leonetti, an MTA cleaner for almost 23 years, kept calm and kept mopping as she passed the man, a South Carolinian she described as “nonchalant” and “polite.”

“I kept on going as normal and just did my job until I got a chance to call it in and I called it in,” said Leonetti, an MTA cleaner for almost 23 years.

“I said, ‘Oh, you smell good,’ and he said, ‘Thank you.’ I kept continued walking until had a space to just go downstairs. I did my call and then I came back upstairs and kept on moving,” she said.

“We got a police response immediately,” said MTA Chief Safety Officer Pat Warren. “Nobody should be carrying a weapon in the city and particularly in the subway system.”

Cops booked David Taylor, 36, of Seneca, South Carolina, shortly after 7 a.m. on charges of criminal possession of a firearm, NYPD said.

Leonetti, the mother of two teenagers, said her heroics were all in a day’s work.

“I always look around, see what’s going on in the station,” she said.

“I’m used to all of this. I just know when to stay away and I know when to approach it … I guess that’s the street smart in me.”
