Jessica Chastain will be spreading the not-so-good word of televangelism in her new biopic, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, opening in theaters this weekend.
Chastain stars as Tammy Faye Bakker, a controversial media personality who co-created the infamous televangelist TV program, The PTL Club, with her husband Jim Bakker (played in the movie by Andrew Garfield in a lot of make-up).
Directed by Wet Hot American Summer’s Michael Showalter, and written by Abe Sylvia, the movie is based on the 2000 documentary of the same name that is narrated by Ru Paul. That can make it a tad confusing when it comes to figuring out how to watch the 2021 The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Don’t worry, Decider is here to help. Read on for where to watch The Eyes of Tammy Faye, and when to expect The Eyes of Tammy Faye on streaming.
WHERE TO WATCH THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE:
Right now, the only way to watch The Eyes of Tammy Faye is by going to a movie theater. The film will be in theaters only beginning this Friday, September 17. You can find tickets at a theater near you here.
If you want to watch the documentary that the 2021 film is based on, which is also titled The Eyes of Tammy Faye, you can buy or rent the 2000 documentary on Amazon Prime.
WHEN WILL THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE BE STREAMING?
There is not yet a digital release date for The Eyes of Tammy Faye, and it’s hard to say when the film will be available either to rent on video-on-demand or to watch on streaming.
Tammy Faye is a Searchlight Pictures release, a studio that has not had a consistent release strategy during the pandemic. The last Searchlight movie to release in theaters, The Night House, came to theaters on August 20 and is still not available on streaming. Our best guess, based on that, is that Tammy Faye won’t be available on streaming for at least 45 days, which is the new theatrical window many studios have been adhering to.
But this is all speculation. If you want to see the movie right away, your best bet is to go to a movie theater.
IS THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE ON HBO MAX?
No. The Eyes of Tammy Faye is a Searchlight Pictures release, not a Warner Bros. release. During the pandemic, HBO Max—which is owned by Warner Media—has been the streaming home for Warner Bros. blockbusters. That means while you can watch a Warner Bros. movie like Malignant on HBO Max, you won’t be able to watch a Searchlight movie like The Eyes of Tammy Faye.
However, you can get a 13-minute first look at The Eyes of Tammy Faye on HBO Max, which includes clips from the film and interviews with the cast.
IS THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE ON NETFLIX?
No. Right now, the only place to watch The Eyes of Tammy Faye is in a movie theater. If you don’t want to miss out on the fun, you may want to grab your vaccination card and hit up your nearest cineplex.
