Man reported missing in Merrillville found dead in pond

A man who went missing in early March was found dead in a retention pond near the Merrillville hotel from which he went missing.

A Lake County Coroner’s office release said Sunday that Shaun Kowalewski, 27, was found in the retention pond near the Fairbridge Inn Express, 8250 Louisiana St., around 5:49 p.m. April 18. The manner of his death is pending, according to the release.

Kowalewski was staying at the hotel because he was getting ready to move into a place of his own family members said at the time. He’d been there about a week when his dad picked him up March 1 to run some errands because he doesn’t have a car.

Kowalewski’s father went back to the hotel March 5 to check in on him, discovered he was missing and that the room in which he was staying had been ransacked, though his laptop — a prized possession of his — was still in the room.

Family members described Kowalewski as someone who spent a lot of time by himself, though he had his group of friends. Attempts to reach the family Monday were unsuccessful.

Attempts to reach the Merrillville Police Department Monday were also unsuccessful.
