Peacock’s ‘Dr. Death’ to Premiere in July (TV News Roundup)

How does a doctor who graduated from one of the top medical schools get accused of killing two of his patients but get to continue on to perform more surgeries? That is what Peacock’s upcoming limited series “Dr. Death” will explore when all eight episodes hit the streamer on July 15.

Joshua Jackson stars as the titular “Dr. Death,” a nickname given to the real-life former neurosurgeon Christopher Duntsch who was accused of injuring, maiming or maiming 33 patients in two years and later sentenced to life imprisonment in one such case.

Based on Wondery’s podcast the series is inspired by the true story of Duntsch, endeavoring to get to the “why” behind his actions while also revealing the cracks in the healthcare system that allowed him to slip through and continue to work in Texas.

In addition to painting a complicated portrait of Duntsch, it also follows two doctors and a Dallas prosecutor who fought to bring Duntsch to justice: neurosurgeon Robert Henderson (Alec Baldwin), vascular surgeon Randall Kirby (Christian Slater) and Michelle Shughart (AnnaSophia Robb).

“Are we going to sit here chatting or are we going to do something?” Slater’s Dr. Randall Kirby is heard saying in voice-over on a new trailer, which you can watch below.

“You come for me, you better be ready for what I’m going to do to you,” Jackson’s Duntsch follows.

“Dr. Death” also stars Grace Gummer. It is executive produced by showrunner Patrick Macmanus via his Littleton Road Productions banner, as well as Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch and Taylor Latham via Escape Artists, and Hernan Lopez and Marshall Lewy of Wondery. (This series is under Macmanus’ overall deal with UCP.)

Directors on the series include Maggie Kiley, who also executive produces the first two episodes, Jennifer Morrison and So Yong Kim.
