Tensions reignited between The View hosts and guest host Caitlyn Jenner on today’s episode of the ABC talk show, as Sunny Hostin and Joy Behar questioned Jenner’s ties to former President Donald Trump and the Republican Party in general.
When the panel discussed whether the GOP can attract millennial and Gen Z voters to the party, Jenner argued that young Americans “want a Republican party that is more inclusive to other people.”
“There’s gotta be a next generation, and I think they’re out there. And I’m hopeful that they’re out there,” she said. However, Jenner alleged that on the other hand, “The media is against [Republicans]. They won’t give the Republicans a fair break.”
Hostin interjected: “With Trump as the head of the Republican Party, I think that’s kinda difficult.”
“Trump certainly had his messaging issues,” Jenner said, to which Hostin replied, “He had a big insurrection issue, and a couple of impeachment issues as well.”
While Jenner said she wasn’t there to defend Trump and agreed that the Republican Party needs better candidates moving forward, Hostin argued that Trump “still has a stranglehold of the Republican party,” and that around 60 percent of Republicans still agree that the former president needs to lead the party.
“As long as [Republicans] keep perpetuating the big lie that Trump won the election, it’s not gonna change anything,” Behar added.
“Water over the dam, I am all for election integrity,” Jenner replied, capping off the tense hot topics segment.
Behar previously sparred with Jenner during her appearance on the show last June, when the former California governor candidate refused to say whether she was “one of those Republicans” who thought Trump won the 2020 presidential election.
“[Trump] was a disruptor when he was president,” Jenner said at the time. “I want to do the same thing… We need to change the system, and I’m going to change the system for the positive.”
Behar laughed off Jenner’s statement that she wanted to do “the same thing” as Trump, and the two’s argument was only cut off by moderator Whoopi Goldberg sending the segment to commercial break. One thing is for sure: When Jenner is on The View, expect some lively debates to unfold.
The View airs weekdays on ABC at 11/10c.
